This course will begin with a survey of the individual fields of World Englishes (WEs) and Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Both fields approach the linguistic research of non-native English speakers from different perspectives and to a great extent in isolation from one another. Recent work has pushed for bridging this paradigm gap as WEs and SLA findings provide important insight useful to both fields. The ultimate objective of this course is then to look at recent work engaging both WE and SLA perspectives. We will go over and compare the linguistic features and contexts of worldwide varieties of English and Learner Englishes.
