[WiSe 2020/21] Regimes of Violence in Post-Socialist Countries

The goal of the course is to give the comparative analysis of regimes of violence across countries and its forms. The course will be focused on the countries of post-socialist bloc (Eastern European countries and ex-USSR countries). A special attention will be paid to the evolution of violence character before the end of Cold War and after the transition period. The course will be subdivided into two parts. The first part looks at interpersonal violence and violence cycles. In the class we will explore legitimate and illegitimate forms of violence and discuss the character of domestic violence, gender violence regimes. The second part is devoted to collective violence and political violence. In the class we will explore how state control of violence and changing political regimes are associated with transformation of forms of violence.  The language of the course is English.
