This course will examine the development, dynamics and challenges of international and European environmental politics. Questions that this course seeks to answer include: What are the main institutions of international environmental governance, and how have they evolved? Who are the main actors, how do they influence global environmental politics, and how do they interact with each other? What strategies and instruments are used to address global environmental problems? How are international decisions implemented, and how effective are international environmental regimes? A particular focus will be on the European Union's environmental and climate policies. In this context, we will discuss the development of European environmental policy, the main environmental policy instruments of the EU, the interests of the member states and the role of the EU on the international level.
