Resistance belongs to the most contested concepts in modern history. It includes violent and non-violent activities, large-scale mobilisation and everyday doings, spectacular as well as clandestine actions. The ambivalence of resistance draws from its Janus-face effects as it can both subvert and support the existing power relations. In this seminar, we will discuss the most successful approaches to the study of resistant actions that have been advanced by historians, anthropologists and sociologists as well as selected examples of resistant activities coming from various historical settings.
